Video’s 50th Birthday

This week the videotape recorder turned 50 years old. The computer gets a lot of credit for changing the culture, but actually, the video recorder can’t be far behind when it comes to impact. Before it’s advent, everything was shot, developed, and projected on film. Movies, TV programs, and even news. Few probably remember the incredible task it was to shoot a breaking news story on film, run it to the lab, and get it developed and projected in time for the evening news.

My first advertures in filming were done on my dad’s “Super-8” film camera because we’d never heard of “home video.” Check out this nostalgic story from TV Technology magazine on just how far we’ve come in the last half-century…
