The Battle for Words
Why the fight over language may be the most important cultural struggle of our time.
Words matter because words shape reality. That’s why George Orwell’s 1984 still feels so current. His warning wasn’t only about censorship. It was about what happens when powerful institutions redefine the language itself. Once words lose their original meaning, people lose the ability to have an honest conversation.
We’re watching that play out today. Terms that once had clear definitions have become political brands, marketing slogans, or ideological tests. Instead of helping us understand each other, they’re often used to shut down debate. If you challenge the label, you’re accused of challenging the virtue behind it.
That’s a dangerous place for any culture to land.
As Christians, we should be the first to resist the manipulation of language. Truth doesn’t need verbal sleight of hand. It doesn’t need slogans that obscure reality or labels designed to silence questions.
Call things what they are. Define your terms. Be bold. Refuse to let fashionable language do your thinking for you.
