Once Again, the Porn Industry May Decide the Next Format Battle

You heard it here folks a long time ago. I’ve been saying that the HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray battle may hinge on the porn industry, and the Los Angeles Times confirmed the story in Monday’s edition. It’s all hush-hush, but the backers of both formats are fighting for the attention of the pornography industry.
You’ll remember that porn had a huge influence in moving the industry to VHS from Betamax, and they began streaming online video long before TV networks or other program producers. You cannot underestimate the impact the porn industry has on broadcasting and media today. As the Times reports, Blu-Ray currently has the backing of the big electronics companies and Hollywood – plus, at this point, their image quality is better. But lots of factors come into play here, and we’ll have to wait and see who’s the clear winner – or should I say loser…

  1. I don't believe the porn industry today have the same sway as with VHS.

The main reason that insiders I've read say is the internet.  The porn users (God deliver them) have moved away from ordering hard copy videos to downloading and burning their own.  Some adult video producers are wanting a gimic and have made the leap to HD-DVD which is easier to author than Blu-ray – thus the quicker, cheap route.

Currently Blu-rays discs are selling 2:1 over HD-DVD discs and with more PS3's becoming available the ratio will more than likely increase for Blu-ray.  Since no major studios have recently decided to sign on to HD-DVD, many insiders are saying that the death for HD-DVD will be when Universal and their various video companies sign on with Blu-ray.  Universal is currently the only major studio that is exclusively HD-DVD.

  2. I agree with you on boycotts, but there's a big difference between boycotts and using our buying power in a positive way.  Voting with our pocketbooks is a great way to influence the marketplace.

  3. I'm not really big into "boycotts" of things, but I'm just wondering … What if evangelical Christians "voted" with their pocketbooks in this situation? What I'm talking about it is seeing which way the porn industry zigs on this DVD format question — and then (for evangelical Christians, in an organized and intentional fashion) zagging. If porn goes Blu-Ray, evangelicals (and other anti-porn conservatives) go HD-DVD. What do you think? Could it work? Could evangelicals then "force" the mainstream entertainment industry to go with their preferred DVD format, and relegate most porn to an alternate format ghetto?
