For Brian, social media isn’t just something that happens at random. He’s a strong believer that you need to “incite conversations.” Here’s his take:
As more individuals and organizations embrace social media, the question arises, “So, what do I get out of this effort?” or, “I’m putting content out there but no one is participating!” Frankly, as consumers, we’re deluged with blogs, tweets, QR codes, and bullhorns asking us to pay attention, like, share, retweet or comment. Even phone calls to customer service lines ask for our feedback.

So, how does your organization realize interactive success?
Encourage disparate opinions. Go off the beaten path with your conversation. Don’t take the high road all the time. Point to topics that are less popular in general conversation.
When a comment comes in that is negative (but not harassing), embrace it and acknowledge it. Many moderators rush to delete negative comments off their blog or Facebook page – not always the best approach.

Try: What Bible verse speaks about honoring your parents?
Instead of: What’s your favorite Disney character?
Try: What Disney character needs to be retired?
Instead of: Share with us your favorite vacation spot.

It takes extra work. It’s harder. But it can work.
