Christian Media Has Gotten Better, But There’s Still a Long Way to Go

The brutal invasion of Israel should be another wake-up call…

Back when 9/11 happened, I knew, based on other events in the past, Christian radio and TV would barely even mention it. They are usually so locked into their regular schedules that they ignore entirely immediate events and, as a result, fail to answer the spiritual questions millions of people are asking.

I was so frustrated that within a few hours of the planes hitting the World Trade Center, I sent out a detailed FAX to Christian radio and TV stations around the country, recommending how to respond to the crisis. I wrote about that here.

So, more recently, after the attack on Israel and the atrocities Hamas inflicted on innocent civilians, I hoped we would do better.

And we did, but not by much.

Christian TV and radio networks are better positioned to respond immediately since they control programming slots, and a few did with breaking updates and interview stories on what was happening.

But for regularly scheduled programmers, you wouldn’t have known anything happened.

I even watched one Israel-focused weekly Christian program that was still inviting people to visit Israel and sign up for their tour of the Golan Heights!

Talk about out of touch.

As Christian media professionals, we need to do better. We need to be able to quickly pivot, find experts, and schedule studio and location segments, and respond to what’s happening now.

Certainly, we don’t have the budgets or large production teams like network news organizations. But we also now live in a world where American’s confidence in those mainstream media outlets has dropped to a historic low.

This is a critical moment to supply the answers people are looking for.

Until we can do that, Christian media will continue to become more irrelevant.
