Advocacy Versus Inquiry and the Key to Successful Meetings

How many of your meetings involve advocacy versus inquiry?  In other words, are the discussions in your organization all about defending people’s ideas, or about asking honest questions?  Far too many employees spend most of their time defending themselves and not nearly enough time listening and being open to new ideas.

You can’t win with advocacy because everyone spends their time trying to prove they are right.  The kind of advocacy I’m talking about is driven by insecurity and causes people to focus on being right more than making a difference.

Meetings driven by honest inquiry on the other hand open the door to new ideas, innovation, and original thinking.

If the best ideas don’t win in your meetings, the it’s time to change how you approach the discussion.
