A Big Difference Between Winners and Losers

Obviously, the discussion between what makes people winners or losers in life has been going on for thousands of years.  But one thing I’ve noticed is that people who live lives of significance, are people who truly know themselves.  They can accurately tell you what their strengths and weaknesses are.  They know where they need help, and where they need to grow.  They have very few (if any) illusions when it comes to their expertise or potential.  Most of all, they’re remarkably humble about it all.

The rest of the population?  I find that they’re way off base when it comes to their own life. They’re convinced they have talent where there is none, expertise that doesn’t exist, and potential that no one else can see.  They assert themselves in inappropriate places, and take credit for work they didn’t accomplish.

In short, they have no clue about themselves.  We call it “self-awareness” and they have very little of it. They’ve never taken the time to look deep into their hearts and take a cold, hard, dispassionate look at who they are and what they’re made of.

How about you?  Have you taken that look lately?

  1. Hey Phil, here is my take: “Winning in life…is an attitude, it originates deep within the soul of a man or woman. It is derived from a knowledge that God loves us and accepts us simply as we are, even with all our faults and failures. It is experiencing His undeserved favor and unconditional love, resting in His strength knowing He will never abandon us or forsake us. Therefore, we can walk in faith and confidence, and rise above even the toughest of life’s challenges… and, as a result, we…WIN IN LIFE!!! ” ~Tony De Felicis

  2. Phil,

It’s interesting how much we think alike, yet come from different backgrounds & history. My thoughts are simple. In order to “win” in life…. you must win with others! And in order to win with other… you must be willing to put yourself out there and serve & help & give & sow & so on. You might even find that you are the only one like this, but the God on the inside of you will not relent with this style, for it worked for His son Jesus & He made it possible for us all to win!!
Losers on the other hand, become so singular in focus……. typically on self that they seldom win with others as they themselves journey through life…..ALONE! In Genesis, God says it’s not good that man should be alone! Thus they lose in life because the broken focus has left them living on ‘life’s discount rack’ , rather than on
    God’s best!

    Thanks,
    Bobby

  3. What is winning? I learned several years ago that simple task was what I had overlooked. For example, when I made being debt-free my financial definition of winning, I achieved it.

P.S. Thank you for speaking at Power Lunch yesterday.

  4. I think it was Bruce Wilkenson who wrote how the Lord spoke to him right before he got up to preach after he had recently committed a sin: “You have no idea how worthless you are to me if I take my hand off of you.” These words have stuck with me for years. If I ever think I’m something I’m not, I recall this reality in my own life.

  5. I love this prayer that originated with one of my spiritual fathers, Dallas Willard: “Father, never let my gifting take me where my character can’t keep me.” I love that prayer — I pray it often. He answers. Sweet relief!
