Hollywood Continues its Fear of Islam

In the movie “2012” – about the destruction of the world, the things you don’t see destroyed are Muslim sites, especially the site of the Hajj, the focus of the most important pilgrimage in Islam.  As director Roland Emmerich said in an interview: “We have to all, in the western world, think about this. You can actually let Christian symbols fall apart, but if you would do this with [an] Arab symbol, you would have … a fatwa, and that sounds a little bit like what the state of this world is. So it’s just something which I kind of didn’t [think] was [an] important element, anyway, in the film, so I kind of left it out.”

In other words, Christian locations and symbols can be destroyed, no problem.  But Muslim locations and symbols?  That’s another story.  Apparently, the world continues in Islam’s fearful grip.

  1. The main reason for this is we as Christians know the difference between fact and fiction we know that this is a fictional movie and we also know that our God is not in any building or any symbol that the destruction of these symbols DOES NOT and WILL NOT mean the destruction of GOD

  2. The isue is not that other faiths won’t back down, it is that Christian’s won’t stand up.

Jesus said in Mathew 10:34 that He did not come to send peace on earth, but a sword.

Jesus was NO punk and had NO fear, so why are we?

    Peace comes after a storm.

  3. Phil, after the shooting in Texas, I wrote this…

Staunch the flow of unawareness, Close this wound that bleeds,

Detect patterns of closed mindedness, Not sow more bleeding seeds.

Mega churches teach mega giving, From poor folk to rich grandees,

Public schools teach complaint ones, To love unquestioned public deeds.

Culture defines favored groups in whole, To be perfect without doubt,

When, in fact, groups have three tiers, Good, middle and bad to rout.

Then again, one group our blind culture, Hates, in fact, entirely,

Any group that says, Staunch the flow, That is, anyone who sees.

Anyone who sees, This age’s dilemma is sight,

Anyone says, See? Of course, cannot be right.

We let enemies roam for devious, self-interest reason, While banishing friends,

Staunch the flow of unawareness, oh gambit wolves of treason, Bad means have bad ends.

  4. Ty, that’s a nice sentiment, but it’s patently false.  First, your Scripture reference – Matthew 10:34 is in the midst of a long statement by Jesus, and context matters.  “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn
” ‘a man against his father,
          a daughter against her mother,
       a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law –
a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’

“Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”

The sword – the division Jesus is speaking of – is the seperation of families because some cling to this world and the importance of their things more than following Christ.  It has nothing to do with fighting the world.

You need to understand what so many Christians miss these days – the entire Bible is God’s love letter to the human race.

We love John 3:16, but ignore John 3:17, “For God did NOT send his Son into the world to CONDEMN the world, but to SAVE THE WORLD through him.”

There can be no us versus them, but understanding that Jesus and the Father desperately desire for ALL of us to be in heaven: “(The Lord) is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9

  5. In an interesting follow up to this, I was driving up from San Diego today and on the 5 Freeway in Orange County, there is a 2012 movie billboard of the giant statue of Jesus Christ above Rio crumbling under the destruction.  So far, I haven’t seen any billboards of an Islamic symbol or location crumbling…

  6. Another followup, over at Big Hollywood, I read a story talking about Emmrich looking now at doing an “Independence Day 2”.  Here’s what he said:

“In Independence Day, it was about a king who leads his country into a fight against an outside invader. I didn’t want to make that movie during the Bush years. It was not thought that George W. Bush would have made a great king. Now with Obama, it’s another story.”

    Really?!?  Yikes.

  7. Paul,

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

You are the only one that directly challenged me and what i put out there. That’s what i’m talking about. Us as Christians have to stand up and challenge what’s false and twisted.

The reason why Hollywood is afraid of islam is because Hollywood knows they will stand up and say something if they are portraid in a image that they don’t agree with.

If Christian’s are not tin the positions to produce quality and accurate images of who Christ really is,then we have to at least stand up when twisted images are put out there.

I agree the Father desires that all be in heaven through His son Jesus, but Jesus all stood for the Truth. He turned over tables and called people out to get them to see the truth. Sometimes that’s what we have to do.

Paul,it’s good to know that you will stand for the truth.

  8. From one D-lister mocking Jesus in an acceptance speech to a comedian on HBO splashing urine on a painting representing Jesus, it seems open season on Christians.

Since there is no Christian equivalent to jihad (and no, the inquisition doesn’t count), there are no responses to this bullying…

    Except…

    Prayer.

  9. For a group like Muslims who are so particular in there beliefs and admant about how things are done, like no pork, no pigs, taking offense at things like piggy banks on someone’s desk, why is their founder named MoHAMMed?

Personally, I’d like to see a cartoon about a bunch of terrorists (who all happen to be pigs) who blow themselves up at a restaraunt and wind up as BLT’s!

  10. Because you don’t want to “upset” the Sons of Mohammed.

Because you know what they are capable of when (not if) they get “upset (TM)”.

If Christians went into a kill-crazy rage (and acted on it) every time we thought (or imagined) someone somewhere might possibly be dissing us, Hollywood and all the Media would be tiptoeing on eggs around us, too.  (That is, when they weren’t sucking up to us and singing our praises.)

    Fear Breeds Respect.

  11. Well, Roland & Emmerich made Independence Day as a piece of flattery to Bill Clinton (who do you think ID‘s Heroic President was supposed to be?)  As Benjamin Disraeli observed, “With a ruler, you lay the flattery on with a trowel.”

And it worked.  Ol’ Slick Willie used to screen ID like Howard Hughes did Ice Station Zebra.
