I completely agree with Mary.
Writing is a gift/skill set that everyone thinks they have. But when you break down why a movie/play/book/event/blog didn''t work - it all goes back to the fundamentals. Poor writing will sink the ship everytime!

I think writer can be considered to be included in filmmaker. I "want to be" a writer-producer-director which is somewhat encompassed by the word filmmaker. Even so, I did find it interesting that you didn't include director or film producer as their own categories, Phil.

I too am inching my way towards my dream of writer-producer. I'm interested in seeing how much overlap my dissertation may share with Phil's views on branding and media in the church.
I find this poll very interesting. We're often told we can be only one thing - and the person who successfully does more than one is looked at as the exception to the rule. However, I get really excited when I hear about places that allow and even encourage cross-training (like Pixar). I've spent a good chunk of my life trying to come to terms about my purpose and how to unify my gifts and talents into a central direction. By vocation, I'm a preacher, and I find much fulfilment from sharing the gospel with others. However, I want to do so not just in the pulpit, but beyond the pulpit.
I am also a writer, author, filmmaker, artist, musician and inventor. My desire is to develop a way to incorporate all of these things into a central, focused direction for my life - and to help others do the same with their own gifts and talents. I was looking for the "filthy rich and living in the tropics" category.
I am a writer and tv producer - and I can prove it by the clients that pay me good money to do both for them. I've also been a professional filmmaker. I'm also a musician and an artist, but I haven't been paid to play my guitar since college, and I've never tried to sell a painting.
I guess my point is this: if you want to know where your professional skills lie, just take a look at what people pay you to do for them. There are many wanna-be writers and filmmakers who will never be published, distributed or paid. That's not a profession, that's a hobby, and everyone needs a good hobby, but everyone also needs to pay the bills.
I am a writer and I chose "writer". The reason so few people selected it is everyone thinks they are a copywriter...ha ha.

Writers are the backbone of the entertainment industry . . . and since I am a writer I will gladly choose my own.
