Chair, Cinema & Media Arts Department in the Division of Fine Arts and Communication, School of Arts and Sciences
Basic Function and Responsibility:
The Chair of the Cinema & Media Arts Department provides vision and leadership for a dynamic and growing undergraduate program – Cinema & Media Arts with a current enrollment of approximately 200 students. In addition, the Chair provides leadership for our Studio Task Force, a group of approximately 200 Christian professionals in media in the greater LA area, and for our annual Biola Media Conference, a conference that attracts between 500 and 700 participants. In addition, the Chair teaches courses in the area of his or her specialty.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Major responsibilities for the program include providing vision and leadership in strategic planning and program development as well as the on-going administrative oversight of the department and studio; developing department faculty and staff; inspiring and advising students; ensuring that CMA programs are current, relevant, and rigorous; employing sound budget and fiscal resource management; representing the program internally at Biola and externally with constituents; coordinating effectively with other academic and administrative units of the University; leading the development of external relationships to support the program and division mission; and participating in external fund raising to support Cinema & Media Arts.
The Chair is also a member of the Undergraduate Council of Chairs and Coordinators that reports to the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education.
The Chair reports to the Dean of Fine Arts/Communication in the School of Arts and Sciences
The department faculty and administrative staff report directly to the Chair.
The successful candidate will have an earned terminal degree, doctorate preferred, from an accredited institution and in one of the academic disciplines represented in the program; successful college teaching experience; commitment to integration of faith, learning, and practice; demonstrated Christian faith, maturity, and servant-leadership; demonstrated commitment to Biola University’s mission, vision, and core values; agreement with Biola’s statement of faith; demonstrated successful leadership experience that inspires others; demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies and promote a collegial work environment; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively – both orally and in writing; commitment to equal opportunity, intercultural understanding, educational excellence, student learning, and faculty advocacy.
