Faith Based Organizations and their HD Plans
The polling results are in, and with nearly 150 religious organizations voting, the following is the landscape for HD:
37% will be upgrading to HD in 2007
14% will go 16X9 but not HD
11% have already upgraded
37% have no plans for HD at all
How does your church, media ministry, station, network, or organization stack up compared to the results? I'm very happy that 37% of respondents will be going HD this year, but not so happy that an equal number - 37% have no plans at all for HD.
I believe it's time for HD. As I said before, there are plenty of competitors, and differing standards, but there is enough unity in the industry to make a move and make it now. For editing, Final Cut Pro and Avid have low cost systems, and there are plenty of cameras and production equipment on the market.
Start thinking about the move. Yes, it can be expensive if you already have an extensive SD infrastructure, but any organization can begin a gradual transition.

I agree that if organizations don't make plans soon to upgrade they will soon be outdated themselves. I have a real pet peave about the ignorance of some poeple and organizations who see no need for it. Clearly, it is not a necessity just yet, but the picture produced by HD is so remarkably better that it soon will be. It seems to me in the circles I talk too that many poeple think they are getting an HD picture but are not. Many poeple do not realize what real HD is, and that even if something is broadcast HD you still need an HD receiver to capture it. After watching HD it is very difficult to watch anything else.
WILL TV STATIONS AIR HD? We know from experience that TV/DTV stations will pick up the technology (including 5.1 audio) as it becomes affordable and/or mandatory for their future.
KNOWING YOUR AUDIENCE - As HD sets and HD/DVR video players/recorders come under $1,000 the US HD market is slowly but surely growing and it's wanting more HD/16:9/5.1 and not a 4:3 box in the middle of their expensive new TVs ("Martha, shall we use the gray or the black bars tonight?").
I learned a very interesting fact from the Sony camera engineer who installed our new Sony HDC-1500 HD cameras at our Benny Hinn facility in California two weeks ago. She is the principal camera engineer on the west coast and has done all of the major HD cam installs over the last couple of years including trucks and permanent facilities. Her perspective from "the inside" was that HD camera technology has more or less "peaked for now. The resolutions aren't going any higher and people are now settling in on 720p, 1080i, 1080p, etc. So her conclusion was that you can now buy safely knowing you aren't going to get "out-rezzed" by something new next year or even maybe in 5 years. Sure, manufacturers are going to add bells and whistles to attract new buyers. We are all familiar with how much we use the sepia tone and negative video effects on our PD150s right? Go ahead and take the plunge, your eyes will adjust to the wider image in only a few short days.
Hey Truett
Glad to hear your install is continuing and going well.
Are you and Jeff getting used to the 16:9 shot yet?
We are too old and blind to notice.
I'm just wondering how many churches were polled for this survey? The percenatges are quite large and I'd like to use this information in a presentation that I am working on for our church. Thanks.
I found the answer to that question BUT my next question deals with weekly attendance. What is the average attendance of the churches involved with this poll? Thanks.
It was a cross section of churches, religious stations, networks, and production facillties. The size of the churches weren't specified.
